I get this question quite often and the answer is yes. Children respond quite well to hypnosis and can benefit from it as a form of adjunctive therapy. I have seen children for a number of issues, to include:
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) & Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Sports performance
- Academic performance
- Enuresis (bed-wetting)
Please don't consider this a comprehensive list, as there are a large number of things that hypnosis has been effective in treating.
How quickly does it work for children?
This is the other question I hear often (even regarding adults). Results do vary, but it's typically faster than you might expect. Children are very imaginative and also flexible in terms of change. That combination makes it much easier for them to experience faster results than many adults.
How old is too old?
There's no cut-off, so rest easy. The fact is that children all the way into adolescence tend to respond in similar ways. Granted, the method by which hypnosis is performed and reason for the visit may be different, but the results are the same.
Can I be present with my child during the session?
Absolutely!! Some children want to have their parent(s) present and that's actually quite beneficial to all parties as it allows me to coach everyone in reinforcing our work during the session.
